Unit 5 - Asian Civilizations: Qin Dynasty

Time Span:

  • c. 500 BC – 221 BC

Key Events:

  • Confucious teaches his code of ethics.

  • Lau-tzu founds Taoism.

  • Qin Shi Huangdi conquers the seven warring kingdoms of China to form one united Chinese empire.

  • Qin Shi Huangdi builds the Great Wall of China, implements standardization, practices censorship, and builds 7,500 terracotta soldiers to be buried with him.

Daily Paragraph Editing:  (10 minutes)

  • Have student(s) work independently to edit Week 14 Monday.  In a group setting, use this time to record completion grades on last week’s work.
  • Discuss the correct answers.  Have the student(s) answer “why” for each correction.

Retelling Narrative Stories:  The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash (40 minutes)

  • Outlining: Work together to create an outline for the final paragraph of the story using the story sequence chart.  (15 minutes)
  • Independent Work: Students will change details to match their own unique story (10 minutes)
  • Stylistic Techniques Review (15 minutes) 
    • Review “dress-ups” taught to date (e.g., strong verbs, quality adjectives, who/which clauses).

    • In small groups, have students apply all dress-ups to a simple sentence you write on the board.

    • Share and discuss a few examples.

  • Homework
    • Students should use the story sequence chart created to write the final paragraph of their narrative.  
    • Students should finalize their story using the Week 13-14 Checklist.

Personal Narrative Speech Presentations:  (35 minutes)

  • Present:  Have the student(s) present their personal narrative speech.
  • Feedback:  Provide verbal feedback after each presentation. See Feedback Guidelines for helpful tips.
  • Capstone Speakers:  Select two student volunteers to present to the large group next week as capstone speakers.
  • Make-up Speeches:  Anyone who is absent will have the opportunity to present their speech at the beginning of class next week.
