Unit 5 - Asian Civilizations: Qin Dynasty

Time Span:

  • c. 500 BC – 221 BC

Key Events:

  • Confucious teaches his code of ethics.

  • Lau-tzu founds Taoism.

  • Qin Shi Huangdi conquers the seven warring kingdoms of China to form one united Chinese empire.

  • Qin Shi Huangdi builds the Great Wall of China, implements standardization, practices censorship, and builds 7,500 terracotta soldiers to be buried with him.

  • Map:  (15 minutes)
    • Using the last few slides in the slideshow and the Map Directions, guide students in completing their fill-in-the blank worksheet and blackline map.  See the answer key as needed.

  • Have student(s) work independently to edit Week 14 Monday.  In a group setting, use this time to record completion grades on last week’s work.
  • Discuss the correct answers.  Have the student(s) answer “why” for each correction.

Lesson Plan:

Retelling Narrative Stories:  The Lion and the Mouse (40 minutes)

  • Outlining:  Work together to create an outline for the final paragraph of the story using the story sequence chart.  (20 minutes)
  • Independent Work:  Students will change character and setting details to create their own unique story (10 minutes)
  • Stylistic Techniques:  (10 minutes)
    • Review dress-ups taught to date by having students work in groups of 2-3 to add all dress-ups to a simple sentence you write on the board. 
  • Homework Explanation:
    • Students should use the story sequence chart created to write the final paragraph of their narrative.
